| | Hector Bambino Los Rompe Discotekas On his 2006 Def Jam debut, Hector "El Father" Bambino, formerly of the reggaeton duo Hector & Tito, offers up a hard-hitting Latino rap compilation that makes room for appearances by Fat Joe and Memphis Bleek. Although the Puerto Rico-based Bambino doesn't appear on all of the disc's tracks, he's clearly calling the shots here, deferring only to "El Presidente" (aka Jay-Z), who turns up for a guest shot on the frenetic "Here We Go Yo." 1. | | Young Gunz Brother From Another In the album photos for BROTHERS FROM ANOTHER, the Philadelphia hip-hop duo Young Gunz poses in tracksuits and brimmed hats, a none-too-subtle nod to Run-DMC. The gesture is more than just superficial, as Chris and Neef's second record expertly combines a fun-loving old-school vibe with a more modern, grimy attitude. The 2005 album follows hard on the heels of their 2004 debut, TOUGH LUV, but there's not a hint of a rush, as Young Gunz display a blithe spirit, easing their way through a strong sophomore effort. The twosome establishes the tone on the anthemic "Set It Off," which takes a spare '80s-style bass beat and imbues it with a super-catchy chorus out of the Dirty South. That track fades into the throwback pop-funk of "Don't Keep Me Waiting (Come Back Soon)," featuring playful rhymes, a Luther Vandross sample, and a soulful hook provided by 112. "Don't Stop (YG Party)" oddly boasts that Young Gunz are not "your average '80s babies" between early-rap-era toasts over a haunting backdrop, while "Grown Man Pt. 2" is a typical Kanye West production in that it stands completely outside of time. Chris and Neef show off a more hardcore side on the second half of the record, but melody still prevails on BROTHERS FROM ANOTHER. 1. The Knock Is There 2. Set It Off 3. Don't Keep Me Waiting (Come Back Soon) 4. Tonight 5. Don't Stop (YG Party) 6. Same Sh** Different Day 7. Grown Man Pt. 2 8. Beef 9. It's The Life 10. The Way It Goes 11. What We Gotta Do 12. We Still Here More info here |
| | Jay-Z The Black Album In what he claims to be his final release as a musical performer, Jay-Z drops "THE BLACK ALBUM", a sprawling, ambitious effort that rivals the best work of the rapper's already legendary career. Working with a who's who of hip-hop's most high-profile producers, the outrageously talented MC adjusts his flow and subject matter to the wildly varied tracks, proving once again just how gifted he is as a wordsmith. From the epic "What More Can I Say" (a collaboration with the Buchannans) to the brutally honest, Eminem-produced "Moment of Clarity," THE BLACK ALBUM bleeds with inspiration. Other highlights include the fuel-injected "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" (featuring Timbaland behind the board), the club-ready "Change Clothes" (which sports the Neptunes' trademark beats), and the old-school stomp of "99 Problems" (with pioneering hip-hop producer Rick Rubin). It makes one wonder how an artist at the peak of his craft could willingly put the microphone down. Hopefully, time out of the spotlight will remind Shawn Carter why he became successful in the first place, and find him back in the studio. Tracks: 01) Interlude 02) December 4th 03) What More Can I Say 04) Encore 05) Change Clothes 06) Dirt Off Your Shoulders 07) Threat 08) Moment of Clarity 09) 99 Problems 10) Interlude 11) Justify My Thug 12) Lucifer 13) Allure 14) My 1st Song More info here |
